Harvesting and Learning Through Nature

Writer: Lachlan StirlingLachlan Stirling

At Homai, we believe that learning happens everywhere—in structured activities, in play, and in the meaningful exchanges between tamariki, kaimahi, and whānau. Sometimes, it is our tamariki who become the teachers!

This morning, excitement filled the air as our tamariki eagerly picked blueberries that had ripened over the weekend. Observing the changes in color, size, and growth has been a wonderful hands-on learning experience, fostering their curiosity and connection to the natural world. Alongside blueberries, we also have strawberries and blackberries, which our tamariki love to check on regularly.

As part of our learning, we added the freshly picked blueberries to our morning porridge, reinforcing the idea of nourishing our bodies with kai we grow ourselves. These simple yet powerful moments teach our tamariki about patience, responsibility,

and the rewards of caring for Papatūānuku.
