Mānawatia a Matariki – Celebrating Together

At Kākano Early Childhood Centre, Matariki is a special time to come together with our tamariki and whānau to celebrate the Māori New Year.

Matariki is about remembrance, celebration, and looking forward to the future. It is a time to honor those who have passed, reflect on the year gone by, and set intentions for the year ahead.

At Kākano, we celebrate by learning about traditional Māori kai and coming together to prepare and share a hākari (feast). Tamariki engage in hands-on experiences, cooking, storytelling, and learning about the Matariki stars and their significance.

Through these experiences, our tamariki develop a deeper connection to te ao Māori, strengthening their sense of identity, belonging, and appreciation for this beautiful cultural tradition.
