Honoring Loved Ones and Caring for Papatuānuku

There is a very special plantation of trees at Ōtara Creek Reserve on East Tāmaki Road, with each one planted in memory of loved ones from the Ōtara community.

To honour this important place, earlier this year we came together to plant trees for Psalm’s mum, cousin, and uncle, and for Seliika’s brother. This week, we took a walk to visit them, checking on how much they had grown.

It was a beautiful moment as we stood next to the trees, measuring ourselves against them and admiring all the other plants growing in the reserve. Watching nature flourish reminded us of the love and memories these trees represent.

However, we were sad to see rubbish scattered around the area.

Determined to help, we checked our excursion bags, found gloves and plastic bags, and got to work! Our tamariki picked up as much rubbish as we could fit in our little bags, helping to keep this special place clean.

A gentle reminder: when you're out exploring our community, please take your rubbish home with you. Every small action makes a big difference!

Ngā mihi to Ōtara Waterways and Lake Trust for maintaining the area around our trees and helping to protect our natural spaces.

This was a great display of being tidy kiwis 💚♻️
